The National Magazine Awards honor print and digital publications for outstanding achievement. Originally limited to print magazines, the awards now recognize magazine-quality journalism published in any medium. Founded in 1966, the awards are sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors in association with the Columbia Journalism School and are administered by ASME.

ASME Best Cover Contest 

The ASME Best Cover Contest honors the most successful magazine images of the year. The winners of the ASME Best Cover Contest, including the Cover of the Year, are chosen by ASME members. The contest also includes the ASME Readers’ Choice Awards. The ASME Best Cover Contest began in 2005, when ASME members chose the top 40 covers of the previous 40 years.

ASME Award for Fiction

The ASME Award for Fiction celebrates the historic link between literary fiction and magazine journalism. The award honors print magazines and magazine websites for overall excellence in fiction as exemplified by three examples of short fiction. The ASME Award for Fiction is presented in conjunction with the National Magazine Awards.

ASME NEXT is the leading organization for early-career print and digital journalists. ASME NEXT sponsors educational programs specifically for early-career journalists, including the ASME NEXT Talks series with leading magazine journalists. Magazine Internship Program

For over 50 years, the American Society of Magazine Editors has sponsored the Magazine Internship Program—a ten-week program for rising college seniors at magazines in New York and Washington. Since the program was founded in 1967, 2,000 college students have worked as ASME interns. Nearly 500 have gone on to successful careers in print and electronic journalism.

The ASME Guidelines for Editors and Publishers

First published in 1982, the ASME Guidelines for Editors and Publishers articulate basic principles for the conduct of magazine journalists. The guidelines also summarize industry practices, drawn from those principles, that ensure that the distinction between editorial content and marketing messages is discernible to readers. The guidelines also include information about federal regulations relevant to magazine media.
