The Value of Membership
The principal organization for the editorial and creative leaders of magazines and websites published in the United States, the American Society of Magazine Editors works on behalf of editors and publishers to defend the First Amendment, support the development of journalism and promote the editorial integrity of print and digital publications.
ASME sponsors and administers the most prestigious awards for magazines and websites published in the United States, the National Magazine Awards. ASME also sponsors the ASME Awards for Design, Photography and Illustration and the ASME NEXT Awards for Journalists Under 30 in conjunction with the National Magazine Awards.
A showcase for print and digital best practices, the National Magazine Awards, ASME Awards for Design, Photography and Illustration and ASME NEXT Awards bring editorial and publishing leaders together throughout the year to celebrate and publicize the editorial and visual achievements of magazines and websites. Once limited to print magazines, the National Magazine Awards now recognize magazine storytelling published in any medium, from podcasting and video to newsletters and newspapers.
ASME also hosts the annual ASME Editorial Conference, conducts training programs for reporters and editors and publishes the ASME Guidelines for Editors and Publishers, which articulate basic principles for the conduct of magazine journalists and summarize industry practices intended to protect the editorial integrity of magazines and websites.
The biggest benefit of membership in the American Society of Magazine Editors is belonging. ASME brings editors together. ASME speaks for the editors of magazines and websites and represents their interests. ASME advocates for the interests of editors and publishers on the state and federal level, often in partnership with other organizations.
