WINNER OF THE 2013 ASME SCHOLARSHIP TO THE YALE PUBLISHING COURSE ANNOUNCED

New York, NY (April 22, 2013)—The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) is pleased to announce that Dennis Lewon, Editor-in-Chief, Backpacker, is the recipient of the 2013 ASME Scholarship to the Yale Publishing Course: Leadership Strategies in Magazine and Digital Publishing, which will take place July 14-19, 2013, at Yale University.

“Part of ASME’s mission is to provide training for editorial leaders,” said Sid Holt, chief executive of ASME. “Partnering with the Yale Publishing Course to offer this scholarship is one of the best ways to accomplish this goal.”

The scholarship committee—which included Dorothy Kalins, Director, Dorothy Kalins Ink, and Founding Editor, Metropolitan Home and Saveur; Dick Stolley, Senior Editorial Advisor, Time Inc., and Founding Editor, People; and Tina C. Weiner, Director, Yale Publishing Course—chose Lewon from an exceptional field of applicants. His recent accomplishments, including creating and implementing a post-print vision for Backpacker’s editorial structure in 2010 and overseeing the growth of Backpacker’s tablet editions, as well as his enthusiasm for the program, made him an outstanding choice.

The Yale Publishing Course is designed for mid- to senior- level publishing professionals from around the world. Its goal is to provide participants with the practical skills and knowledge to become more effective leaders as well as the ability to think about and prepare for the most important challenges facing publishers today.

“Disruption in the publishing industry is accelerating and the issues it raises are extremely challenging,” said Weiner. “Publishers need to embrace the opportunities that change brings and use it to their advantage. The carefully selected speakers at the Yale Publishing Course analyze this disruption and offer best practices and new business models that will help managers be more effective leaders.”

The week-long course includes focused lectures and interactive sessions with 30-plus distinguished faculty from the Yale School of Management and industry leaders, including  Michael Clinton, President, Marketing and Publishing Director, Hearst Magazines; Duncan Edwards, President and CEO, Hearst Magazines International; Kim Kelleher, President, and Matt Sanchez, CEO and Co-founder, SAY Media; Cynthia Leive, Editor-in-Chief, Glamour; Scott Dadich, Editor-in-Chief, WIRED; and Tracey Ryder, President and CEO, Edible Communities, Inc.  For a full list of speakers and the preliminary program, visit the Yale Publishing Course website - http://publishing-course.yale.edu/2013ypcmag.
