Job Description:
The American Scholar, the quarterly magazine of current affairs, literature, history, the sciences, and the arts—published by the Phi Beta Kappa Society since 1932—seeks an assistant editor to work in all areas of print and online production, as well as with social media. The Scholar has won or been nominated for several National Magazine Awards, and work that we publish has been anthologized in Best American Essays, The Pushcart Prize, and other publications. Although most of our small staff lives in proximity to our Washington, D.C., office, we continue to work remotely and candidates living outside the Washington area will be considered. 

Responsibilities:
*Fact-check and proofread articles
*Help draft and send our weekly newsletters
*Help draft and post content to our social media accounts, with an eye to expanding our Instagram content and increasing engagement
*Help post articles to our website
*Help gauge the success of social media and newsletter campaigns
*Read submissions 

Requirements:
*At least one internship at a magazine or journal
*A keen editorial eye
*The ability to write elegantly and concisely
*Proficiency in Microsoft Word as well as the suite of Adobe Creative Cloud programs (InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
*A knowledge of Wordpress, HTML/CSS, and Acast/Headliner is a bonus
*An abiding interest in the world of books as well as in the various disciplines of the liberal arts and sciences 

Salary:
$54,000 a year with full benefits
