ASME PRESENTS 60TH ANNUAL NATIONAL MAGAZINE AWARDS

Fifteen magazines and websites receive Ellies; ASME NEXT, Fiction and Design, Photography and Illustration winners also honored

New York (June 3, 2025)—The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) tonight presented the 2025 National Magazine Awards to the editors of 15 leading magazines and websites. The Ellies—named for the symbol of the awards, Alexander Calder’s “Elephant Walking”—were presented at a reception at Racket, a venue in Manhattan. The winners of the ASME Award for Fiction, the ASME Awards for Design, Photography and Illustration, and the 10th annual ASME NEXT Awards for Journalists Under 30 were also honored.

One of the most prestigious journalism-awards programs in the United States, the National Magazine Awards are sponsored by ASME in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Originally limited to print magazines, the awards now honor magazine storytelling published in any print or digital medium, including newspapers and newsletters. The National Magazine Awards are currently presented in 18 categories, ranging from Reporting and Feature Writing to Podcasting and Video.

The winners of the 60th annual National Magazine Awards included The New Yorker, which won the Ellies for Photography, Video and Reviews and Criticism. Mother Jones and ProPublica also received multiple Ellies. Mother Jones was the recipient of the awards for General Excellence in the Literature, Science and Politics category and for Podcasting with The Center for Public Integrity. ProPublica won the awards for General Excellence in the News, Sports and Entertainment category and for Public Interest.

First-time National Magazine Award winners included Food & Wine for Lifestyle Journalism, The Food Section for Newsletters, Heatmap News for Service Journalism, New York Times Opinion for Design and STAT in the General Excellence category for Special Interest publications.

Past winners receiving Ellies this year were The Atavist for Profile Writing, The Atlantic for Reporting, Esquire in the General Excellence category for Service and Lifestyle publications, New York for Columns and Essays, The New York Times Magazine for Feature Writing and Quanta for Single-Topic Issue.

Zoetrope: All-Story received the ASME Award for Fiction for short stories by Elizabeth McCracken, Anthony Marra and Alan Murrin.

The Design, Photography and Illustration winners were The Atlantic for Best News and Documentary Photography; InStyle for Best Social Media; New York for Best Service and Lifestyle Design; The New York Times Magazine for Best Illustrated Stories; New York Times Opinion for Best Still Illustrations; The New Yorker for Best Entertainment and Celebrity Photography and Best Animated Illustrations; Stranger’s Guide with Coda Story for Best Service and Lifestyle Photography; and The Verge for Best News and Entertainment Design.

The recipients of the 10th annual ASME NEXT Awards for Journalists Under 30 were Andrew Aoyama, Deputy Managing Editor, The Atlantic; Marella Gayla, Associate Editor, The New Yorker; Alphonse Pierre, Senior Writer, Pitchfork; Mia Sato, Feature Writer, The Verge; and Kylie Warner, Associate Editor, 1843 Magazine.

Accepting National Magazine Awards on behalf of their publications were The Atavist’s Seyward Darby, The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg, Esquire’s Michael Sebastian, Food & Wine’s Hunter Lewis, The Food Section’s Hanna Raskin, Heatmap News’ Nico Lauricella, Mother Jones’ Clara Jeffery, New York’s David Haskell, The New York Times Magazine’s Jake Silverstein, New York Times Opinion’s Kathleen Kingsbury, The New Yorker’s David Remnick, ProPublica’s Stephen Engelberg, Quanta’s Samir Patel and STAT’s Rick Berke.

The ASME Awards for Design, Photography and Illustration were accepted by The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg, InStyle’s Sally Holmes, New York’s David Haskell, The New York Times Magazine’s Jake Silverstein, New York Times Opinion’s Kate Elazegui, The New Yorker’s David Remnick, Stranger’s Guide’s Kira Brunner Don and The Verge’s Nilay Patel.

The awards were presented by members of the ASME Board of Directors, including the president, Alison Overholt, Founder, Good People LLC, and the immediate past president, Amanda Kludt, Senior Editor, Projects and Initiatives, The New York Times. The presenters also included Joe Brown, Publisher and Editorial Director, one5c; Stephanie Mehta, CEO and Chief Content Officer, Mansueto Ventures; and Julia Turner, Senior Fellow, USC Annenberg Center on Communication Leadership and Policy.
