ASME NAMES NATIONAL MAGAZINE AWARDS JUDGING LEADERS

Top print and digital journalists to oversee awards picks in January 2024; National Magazine Awards Board members also announced

NEW YORK, NY (October 5, 2023)—The American Society of Magazine Editors today announced the judging leaders for the 2024 National Magazine Awards. One of the most prestigious journalism awards programs in the United States, the National Magazine Awards honor magazines and websites for editorial and visual excellence. First presented in 1966, the awards are sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and are administered by ASME.

“When ASME was founded in 1963, the first thing the new group wanted to do was organize a set of awards that would do for magazines what the Pulitzers did for newspapers,” said Sidney Holt, executive director of ASME. “Sixty years on, the National Magazine Awards still show why magazine storytelling, whether in print or online, is uniquely important to media consumers. The January awards judging and the April awards presentation also give hundreds of writers and editors opportunities to get together and celebrate the best of print and digital journalism.”

Every year more than 250 magazines and websites enter the National Magazine Awards, submitting 1,000-plus entries in 17 categories, ranging from Podcasting and Video to Reporting and Feature Writing. Judged by more than 300 writers, editors, art directors and photo editors, the awards are presented annually at a gala reception in New York City attended by 500 journalists and publishers. The winner of each award receives a copper “Ellie,” modeled on the symbol of the National Magazine Awards, Alexander Calderʼs 1942 stabile “Elephant Walking.”

The ASME Award for Fiction, the ASME Awards for Design, Photography and Illustration and the ASME NEXT Awards for Journalists Under 30 are judged in conjunction with the National Magazine Awards. In 2024 the judging will take place in mid-January at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York City.
