ASME Internship Program Discontinued

New York (September 25, 2025)—The ASME Board of Directors voted to discontinue the ASME Internship Program at the meeting of the board on September 18, 2025. Founded in 1967 as the Magazine Internship Program, the program placed rising college seniors in summer internships at magazines and websites in New York and Washington, D.C. Nearly 500 former interns went on to enjoy successful careers in print and electronic journalism.

The Board of Directors decided to discontinue the program because the number of applicants and the number of publications hosting interns have declined sharply in recent years. Restrictions on the employment of interns and the introduction of fellowship programs at many publishing companies have made the ASME Internship Program less relevant. Despite efforts to increase the number of applicants and hosts, the decline in participation has also made it difficult for ASME to maintain the quality of the program.

ASME and its auxiliary organization, ASME NEXT, continues to provide training programs for early-career journalists, including the annual Magazine Workshop, ASME NEXT Visits at the editorial offices of magazines and websites in New York and ASME NEXT Talks with leading journalists, as well as the ASME NEXT Senior Mentor Program.
