Zoetrope: All-Story-ASME Award for Fiction

WINNER
Zoetrope: All-Story
Michael Ray, Editor
"Seven Stories About Tammy," by Elizabeth McCracken, Spring, "Countdown," by Anthony Marra, Spring, and "Town," by Alan Murrin, Summer

These stories demonstrate, in three memorable ways, the best of the short-story form, where a whole universe can be present in a single paragraph, said the Fiction Award judges. The characters in Elizabeth McCracken’s “Seven Stories About Tammy” get drunk, throw shade, crack jokes—as living, breathing people do. There is only a small family at the center of Anthony Marra’s “Countdown,” but the emotional stakes couldn’t be higher. In “Town,” one of the first stories published by the young writer Alan Murrin, a marriage is captured in a few lines of dialogue.
