ASME ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF 2022 NATIONAL MAGAZINE AWARDS

57^TH annual awards presented live at Williamsburg’s Brooklyn Steel; 12 magazines and websites win top honors

NEW YORK (April 5, 2022)—The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) tonight announced winners of the 2022 National Magazine Awards during a live ceremony held at Brooklyn Steel, a music venue in Williamsburg, New York. The awards honor magazines and websites for editorial excellence in categories ranging from Reporting and Photography to Podcasting and Video. The previously announced finalists and winners of the ASME Award for Fiction, the ASME Awards for Photography and Illustration, and the ASME NEXT Awards for Journalists Under 30 were also honored.

Presenters for the awards included Clara Jeffery, editor in chief of Mother Jones, and ASME president; Joe Brown, editor of the Substack newsletter one5c; Stephanie Mehta, CEO and chief content officer at Mansueto Ventures; and Alison Overholt, general manager of Oprah Daily.

The Capitol Riot, the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the COVID-19 pandemic were addressed in work by 2022 National Magazine Award winners. Among the notable pieces were Luke Mogelson’s footage, “A Reporter’s Video From Inside the Capitol Siege,” for The New Yorker; Matthieu Aikins’ definitive account of the fall of Kabul, “The Collapse,” and Carina del Valle Schorske’s essay on a COVID-summer of movement and dance, "Bodies on the Line,” both for The New York Times Magazine.

Other winning stories included the celebration of culinary delights available at America’s gas stations in “Filling Up,” edited by Lesley Suter, and Lindsey B. King’s investigation of “high-THC cannabis concentrates and their (scary) effect on the teenage brain,” in “Shattered Minds” for 5280.

“In a year when print and digital journalism was more important than ever to readers, ASME is proud to recognize the achievements of so many talented editors, writers, video makers and podcasters,” said Sidney Holt, executive director of ASME and administrator of the National Magazine Awards. “It was wonderful to be able to get together again—to be able to celebrate as an industry—after two years of streamed award presentations.”

The New York Times Magazine received three awards, winning in the Reporting, Essays and Criticism and Public Interest categories. The Atlantic and The New Yorker also won multiple awards this year.

The most prestigious honor, General Excellence, went to four publications. Winners were: The Atlantic, a repeat finalist from last year; Car and Driver and Harper’s Bazaar, each with first-time category wins; and Stranger’s Guide, which received its second category win in two years.

In Podcasting, Pineapple Street Studios was a first-time finalist and winner for two episodes of “The 11th,” hosted by Hanif Abdurraqib. Essence was also a first-time winner in Photography for “Of Earth & Sky,” with photographs by Lorna Simpson.

The ASME Award for Fiction winner was The Georgia Review for "After God, Fear Women," by Eloghosa Osunde, "Come With Me," by Nishanth Injam, and “Copper Queen,” by Aryn Kyle.

Winners of the ASME Awards for Photography and Illustration were Catapult, InStyle, National Geographic, New York, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Southern Living and The Verge.

The honorees for ASME NEXT Awards for Journalists Under 30 were Karen Hao, senior AI editor, MIT Technology Review; Jamie Lauren Keiles, contributing writer, The New York Times Magazine; Katy Schneider, features editor, New York; Stephania Taladrid, contributing writer, The New Yorker; and Cat Zhang, assistant editor, Pitchfork.

Established in 1966, the National Magazine Awards are sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and are administered by ASME. Originally limited to print magazines, the awards now recognize magazine journalism published in any medium.

Winners received “Ellies,” the elephant-shaped statuettes modeled on Alexander Calder’s stabile “Elephant Walking,” created in 1942.
