ABC’S DAVID MUIR TO HOST NATIONAL MAGAZINE AWARDSJames Nachtwey to receive lifetime achievement award at annual gala; American Magazine Media 360° Conference begins same dayNEW YORK, NY (January 22, 2015)—Sid Holt, chief executive of the American Society of Magazine Editors, announced today that the National Magazine Awards 2015 Dinner will be hosted by David Muir, anchor and managing editor of ABC News’ “World News Tonight.” More than 60 print and digital magazines will be honored at the annual gala at the New York Marriott Marquis on Monday, February 2. The dinner is being held in conjunction with the American Magazine Media 360° Conference, hosted by MPA—The Association of Magazine Media. “The National Magazine Awards dinner is one of the high points of the year for magazine journalists and their publishing colleagues,” said Holt. “We are honored to share this celebration of the best of magazine media with David Muir, one of the most exciting leaders in a new generation of television journalists.” Sixty-six magazine brands were nominated this year for 24 National Magazine Awards. Five magazines were nominated for the most prestigious honor, Magazine of the Year, including Better Homes and Gardens, Cosmopolitan, The Hollywood Reporter, New York and Vogue. Twenty-nine magazines received multiple nominations, led by New York with 10, Bon Appetit and The New Yorker with six and The Atlantic, GQ and Virginia Quarterly Review with four. Among the magazine journalists to be honored are some of the best known editors and writers in the United States. Editors whose publications have been nominated include The Atlantic’s James Bennet, Better Homes and Garden’s Gayle Goodson Butler, Cosmopolitan’s Joanna Coles, Glamour’s Cindi Leive, Grantland’s Bill Simmons, Harper Bazaar’s Glenda Bailey, The Hollywood Reporter’s Janice Min, Martha Stewart Living’s Martha Stewart, Men’s Health’s Bill Phillips, New York’s Adam Moss, The New Yorker’s David Remnick, Real Simple’s Kristen van Ogtrop, TIME’s Nancy Gibbs, Vanity Fair’s Graydon Carter and Vogue’s Anna Wintour. Among the well-known writers whose work will be honored are Roger Angell for “This Old Man” (The New Yorker); Ta-Nehisi Coates for “The Case for Reparations” (The Atlantic); Pamela Colloff for “The Witness” (Texas Monthly); Monica Lewinsky for “Shame and Survival” (Vanity Fair); Zadie Smith for “Miss Adele Amidst the Corsets” (The Paris Review); and John Jeremiah Sullivan for “The Ballad of Geeshie and Elvie” (The New York Times Magazine). Other notable entries include Audubon’s “Special Issue: Birds and Climate Change”; Consumer Reports’ “A Beautiful Death,” about end-of-life planning; Slate’s “The Year of Outrage”; VICE News’ “The Islamic State”; Pacific Standard’s “Women Aren’t Welcome Here,” about online harassment; Bon Appetit’s “Inside the (Very Active) Mind of Bobby Flay”; and The New Republic’s “How Close They Came,” about John Kerry’s failed Israel-Palestine peace plan. Highlighting the evening will be the presentation of the Creative Excellence Award, honoring unique and enduring contributions to magazine media. The recipient of the award this year is the foremost photojournalist of our time, James Nachtwey, who celebrated his thirtieth year at TIME in 2014. Established in 1966, the National Magazine Awards are sponsored by ASME in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Two hundred sixty-three publications entered the National Magazine Awards this year, submitting 1,548 print and digital entries. Three dozen magazine brands entered the National Magazine Awards for the first time. More than 25 digital-first publications submitted entries. The judges included 340 magazine editors, art directors and photography editors as well as journalism educators.
