The Council is a dynamic, non-profit association located in the urban hub of Penn Quarter, just steps away from the Navy/Archives Metro station. Representing the top commercial brokerage firms and agencies in the United States and around the world, The Council is currently seeking a top-notch Senior Editor to help craft and hone our industry leading commercial insurance content, including a 10x/year print magazine, Leader’s Edge and digital platform. The ideal candidate will possess a keen attention to detail, purposeful, substantive editing, and a desire to learn and improve. If this describes you, read on!

Leaders Edge Magazine is an award-winning publication, catering exclusively to the leading commercial insurance brokers around the globe—both property and casualty and employee benefits. It’s thought leadership wrapped in a unique design (a square format with bold, colorful graphics) that presents itself more as a consumer, newsstand publication. With 20,000 readers and 60+ writing and design awards under our belt, we occupy a high-end, selective segment of the marketplace.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary editor for all Leader’s Edge content. This includes managing content contributors and submissions as well as editing process and ensuring content standards are met, often requiring a revision process with authors.
  • Contribute to print production process, working with the creative director, copy chief, and editor in chief to review and compile edits, manage timelines, and ensure a smooth close to the magazine.
  • Compile summaries of articles for newsletter distribution, taking ownership of article distribution decisions based on growing expertise in Leader’s Edge content and reader interests.
  • Participate in digital content production, including working in Wordpress and overseeing the work of others.
  • Maintain and apply a current and in-depth awareness of the insurance and brokerage industries to include historical information, current events, emerging issues and trends, and the impact on the Council and its membership.
  • Contribute editorially and strategically, including participating in content meetings and other team and Council initiatives.
  • Adhere to the highest editorial standards to produce informative, thought provoking and engaging content and ensure that all content published meets our bar of excellence.
  • Perform other relevant ad hoc duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education: BA/BS in journalism, communications or other relevant field, or equivalent experience.

Required Experience: Seven to ten years as an editor, preferably in the financial services or healthcare fields. Experience in magazine and digital production including working with related vendors, consultants, free-lancers and in-house staff; Committed to journalistic excellence and forward-thinking ways to enhance content delivery.

Preferred Experience: Writing and interviewing skills would be a plus in this role.

Computer Skills: Proficiency in all MS Office applications. Ability to learn Wordpress or other software needed for digital publishing.

Physical Demands: Visual ability to read, edit and review written materials, design and graphics. Hearing and verbal ability to fully participate and interact in meetings, forums and over the telephone. Manual dexterity for writing and/or typing to produce copy and other written materials.

Travel: Some travel may be required to attend meetings and conferences.

Other: Overtime is required to meet scheduled deadlines.
