(3-days per week; ~60-75 hours per month; 125-150 hours per issue)

Primary role: Directing editorial content of the DFI magazine, Deep Foundations, with the goal of enhancing the Institute’s stature by providing information within the deep foundations industry.

Qualifications
Editorial experience, both editing and writing, at a magazine is required;
Experience at a trade/association publication is preferred;
Geotechnical/Deep Foundations industry/engineering experience is a plus.
Adherence to deadlines, accuracy, and good communication skills are critical.
Must be well organized, a strong communicator, have good judgment, have up-to-date computer skills and be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat and file sharing software.

Executive Editor Responsibilities:

  • Decide on content for each issue (6 per year) with input from Executive Director, Director of Technical Activities and Managing Editor

  • Maintain a balance of topics/content among all DFI Technical Committee technologies, and maintain a balance of content between DFI Activities and technical topics

  • Seek relevant industry articles by researching DFI and other industry event presentations and technical papers, traveling to industry events (as approved by Executive Director) to network with participants to learn about general news on projects in the industry, etc.

  • Solicit articles from DFI member-authors; provide clear direction on topic, length and deadlines; secure graphics and follow up to assure deadlines are met.

  • Develop a backlog of articles

  • Hire and manage freelance writers as needed

  • Develop themed issue concepts

  • Write articles/sections of the magazine

  • Edit all articles for content, structure, grammar and style

  • Read and evaluate material submitted for publication consideration

  • Review/approve magazine layout/production and review final PDF proof of magazine as provided by Managing Editor

  • Work with Executive Director and Managing Editor on the ongoing development and enhancement of the magazine
