Texas Monthly is looking for a freelance writer with the chops to deliver the kinds of well-told, rigorously reported, longform feature stories for which the magazine is known. This is a temporary contract position, starting immediately and continuing until the end of December 2020 with the potential to be extended. It does not include benefits. This journalist will report to one of the features editors, but, with the approval of that supervisor, may write for any of the assigning editors on staff. He or she is expected to be available during regular business hours and occasional evenings or weekends in the event a story requires it. This position will likely be entirely remote.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Delivering ambitious longform storytelling (usually 4,000-7,000 words per article)
  • Pitching and writing occasional shorter web articles
  • Originating ideas for fresh stories, along with new and provocative angles on major stories in the news
  • Participating enthusiastically in our fact-checking process
  • Contributing to the monthly editorial pitch meeting
Successful candidates will possess the following skills/abilities:
  • Great facility with language
  • Enthusiasm for telling stories digitally and using modern web tools to do so
  • A nose for good narratives and the ability to report and execute them
  • An appreciation for deadlines
  • Experience covering politics is a plus, as is investigative experience. However, culture writers are also encouraged to apply
  • Applicants should be able to demonstrate knowledge of Texas—its past, its present, and, above all else, the many opportunities it offers for great storytelling at Texas Monthly
