Job Overview

Texas Monthly is looking to hire an assistant editor for operations who would report to, and work closely with, the managing editor. The assistant editor would be responsible for the administrative tasks that are central to the operations of the editorial department, as well as some project management work. This is an entry-level position based in Austin, Texas.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Helping organize and manage editorial projects in coordination with the managing editor
  • Directing or responding to emails and phone calls to the editorial department and the editor in chief
  • Filing copyrights for the print magazine and podcasts
  • Sorting through mail sent to the editorial department and getting it into the right hands
  • Coordinating departmental meetings and events

  • The ability to multitask and to problem-solve
  • A collaborative professional attitude
  • The ability to communicate clearly and diplomatically with parties of all sorts, including Texas Monthly readers and staffers across multiple departments
  • An interest in the operations side of journalism

Education and experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism or an otherwise relevant field
