ASME ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORSVox Media’s Amanda Kludt elected president; new board members include editorial leaders from Dotdash Meredith, Grist, Hearst Magazines and SlateNEW YORK, NY (September 14, 2023)—The American Society of Magazine Editors today announced the results of its annual election. Amanda Kludt, Group Publisher, Lifestyle, Vox Media, was elected president of ASME by general consent. As president, Kludt will oversee the National Magazine Awards, which are sponsored and administered by ASME. Joining Kludt as ASME officers are Alison Overholt, Adjunct Professor, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and Founder, Good People LLC, elected vice president; Joe Brown, Publisher and Editorial Director, one5c, elected treasurer; and Charles Whitaker, Dean, Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University, elected secretary. The first ASME president whose career has been spent exclusively in digital media, Kludt said: “The new ASME board represents a wide range of magazines and websites—just like ASME itself. This may be an especially challenging time for our industry, but I look forward to working with this group to find ways to continue our support of our members, whether they’re editors in chief of long-established titles or ASME NEXT-ers taking their first steps in print or online.” Newcomers to the ASME Board of Directors, each of whom was elected to a two-year term, include Richard Dorment, Editor in Chief, Men’s Health; Sid Evans, Editor in Chief, Southern Living; Ivylise Simones, Creative Director, Slate; and Nikhil Swaminathan, Chief Executive Officer, Grist. Simones will be the first creative director to serve on the ASME board. Reelected to a second two-year term on the board were Susan Goldberg, President and Chief Executive Officer, GBH; Radhika Jones, Editor in Chief, Vanity Fair; Stephanie Mehta, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Content Officer, Mansueto Ventures; Paul Reyes, Editor, Virginia Quarterly Review; Liz Vaccariello, Editorial Director at Large, Organic Spa Media and Wellness Media Company; and Geoff Van Dyke, Editorial Director, 5280 Publishing Inc. Continuing to serve on the board are Julia Turner, Senior Vice President, Content Business Strategy, Los Angeles Times, and the immediate past president of the society, Clara Jeffery, Editor in Chief, Mother Jones. The ASME Board of Directors consists of 16 members, including four officers and the immediate past president. Board members serve two-year terms and are eligible for reelection to a second term. Officers serve one-year terms and are eligible for reelection to a second term. The immediate past president serves ex officio. The 59th annual National Magazines Awards will be presented on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Terminal 5 in New York. The finalists and winners of the ASME Award for Fiction, the ASME Awards for Design, Photography and Illustration and the ASME NEXT Awards for Journalists Under 30 will be honored at the same time. The National Magazine Awards 2024 call for entries will be published on Thursday, September 21, 2023.
